In computing, a virtualization engine is the concept of giving a holistic view of all the resources in the entire network infrastructure. The holistic view is independent of the physical data storage devices and their geographic location. A good example of virtualization is IBM's virtualization engine which offers a common way to address component level devices. Virtualization engines have existed in the mainframe environment for years, but the concept is only now catching up in heterogeneous corporate computer networks.
